In October of 2021, Berlin underwent a bone marrow biopsy along with other testing that uncovered he had multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer that develops in the bone marrow. After the season in January of 2022, he began chemotherapy. Berlin was warned of a chance that he might have to endure Chemotherapy for the rest of his life; however, on December 26th, he underwent his last treatment and a few weeks later was informed that he was cancer free.
