Every equipment operation depends on the people working behind the scenes.
A recent profile of New England Patriots seasonal equipment manager Garrett Reihs offers a great reminder of just how valuable interns and younger staff members are to an equipment department. From preparing equipment throughout the week to handling logistics, traveling with the team, and helping everything run smoothly on game day, these individuals do a tremendous amount of work that often goes unseen by fans.
Garrett isn’t currently a PFEMS member, but his story represents a path familiar to many members of our profession. For many aspiring equipment managers, internships and seasonal positions are the first steps toward earning a full-time opportunity in the NFL. Those early experiences provide the foundation, knowledge, and relationships that help build a career in professional football.
The next time you see an NFL equipment staff getting everything ready for kickoff, remember that the operation is about more than the head equipment manager. It’s a team effort, and the interns and younger staff members play an important role in making it all happen.
Today’s seasonal staff and interns are tomorrow’s full-time equipment managers.
Garrett, best of luck as you continue your journey with the Patriots. Keep up the great work!
